Why does nervousness affect your erection?

If you have no sort of erectile dysfunction and are a healthy 21 year old male, how come when things get hot and heavy with my new girlfriend, my erection only gets to about 3/4 it’s potential? I’m obviously nervous but why does nervousness affect how hard my erection is? Is there anything I can do about it?
P.S. Don’t say Viagra.
